Spring Coming Along

When the it was finally warm enough we transplanted tomatoes and put water walls around them. The water regulated the temperature around the tomatoes so they don’t get too cold or too hot. They are a MUST for young tomato plants.

Seedlings getting a little bigger

When they started to grow more than two inches high we transplanted them to bigger pots. Seen Here. They are on a table we set up outside in the shade for a couple hours a day. The pepper plants do really well at the beginning but when transplanted they become a little shocked. If you can avoid transplanting do. When we do it next year we will just plant the seeds in larger pots to avoid the shocking. Especially the sensitive plants like peppers. Onions are super hardy and don’t mind being transplanted and don’t need to be hardened to sunlight as much as the other plants. They also take well to early planting because they aren’t affected by the cold.

Hardening your plants is one of the most annoying parts about starting seeds indoors. You have to slowly move them outdoors so they can become accustomed to the sun and elements. We weren’t very good at this and we paid dearly. New seedlings are extremely sensitive. We lost a lot of plants and it wasted time and money because we were lazy about this hardening process. We moved them outdoors pretty early and put them in our new Greenhouse.

Our Efforts as Amature Utah Gardeners

Let us begin on a journey. This was our third year trying to garden. This time around we decided to grow our own seeds indoors before spring came. Here are some pictures of the process.

Apparently if you add sodium to the soil it helps…. we didn’t notice a difference.

We used these mulchable planters. Next year we don’t plan to use them again. They don’t seem to grow as well if you just stick the pot in the ground with the new seedling. It’s nice that they’re biodegradable but they don’t decompose quickly enough.

We labeled our pots with a sharpie. I wouldn’t recommend this. It wares off and then you don’t know what it is you’re growing until it gets bigger.

For the smaller seeds it is nice to use tweezers.
